ISO 42001 is the world's first AI management system standard. This practical roadmap guides organisations through the implementation journey — from initial gap assessment to achieving certification.

What is ISO 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS). It provides a framework for organisations to responsibly develop, provide, or use AI-based products and services, addressing the unique challenges AI poses to society.

Phase 1: Gap Assessment (Weeks 1–4)

The first phase involves mapping your current AI governance practices against ISO 42001 requirements. Key areas include AI policy, roles and responsibilities, risk assessment processes, and operational controls. Most organisations find significant gaps in AI impact assessment and supplier management.

Phase 2: Framework Design (Weeks 5–12)

Design and document the AIMS framework including AI policy, objectives, risk assessment methodology, and control catalogue. Establish the AI governance committee and define accountability structures across the three lines of defence.

Phase 3: Implementation and Audit (Weeks 13–24)

Implement controls, conduct internal audits, and perform management review. Address non-conformities before engaging a certification body. Most organisations achieve certification within 6–9 months of commencing the programme.
